Te Ahu a Turanga Noho Marae

Description:  In week 7, we had an overnight stay at the local Marae in Woodville.  We were immersed in Maori culture and participated in a range of activities.  We set two goals to focus on during our stay.

Here is my camp goals:
If you can't read it, here is what it says:
I aim to cooperate with my team more because I usually like hanging out with people I know REALLY well.
I aim to create a creative presentation that will bring humour and entertainment in the camp concert.

Big Idea:
1.  Did you achieve your goals?  How do you know?
I know I have achieved my goals by far. I managed to cooperate with my group well even though I didn't know them that well. I have also brought entertainment in the room at camp concert.

2.  What are you most proud of from the marae stay and why?
I am most proud of being able to have a GOOD sleep. I might of overslept by 30 mins, but at least I got a better sleep than anyone else. I didn't get any interruptions and I didn't let the noise bother me.

3.  What challenged you the most and why?
What challenged me the most was the stilts. I have never tried the stilts before so it was a great experience. I kept falling down and losing my balance but eventually I got there by practising.

Here is my bookmark I made about my highlights at camp.

If you didn't get the picture on the bookmark I will explain them to you.

The first picture is a picture of a pukeko. In the bus ride to the Marae, there was a pukeko walking by. It was pretty amazing that we saw a native bird.

The second one is a Maori symbol. It was called a Swirl Koru. A Swirl Koru means growth and unity. I thought at camp that we were all growing in our learning of Maori culture and togetherness.

The third one is a picture of the Manawatu Gorge. In the Gorge walk I thought the scenery was extraordinary including the story behind it.

Why Apples Are Red

Purpose: create a story to share orally
Description: Oral storytelling is a Maori tradition. We have been planning our own story to tell on the Marae in Week 7.

My Story board:

My final storytelling:

Feedback/Feedforward
I liked your face exprashons it actually made it make more sense for me, I noticed that you used most of that time making a big croud you might have to next time talk a bit slower because I couldn't really understand you. Gaby :P

Evaulation:
I think I have really done well in my storytelling. I have tried to add more humour and crowd participation at my performance at the marae. I do think I could make improvements though. What I think I should work on is to drag the audience in a bit more.

Transformation Geometry

Description:
We have been learning about transformation.  We have specifically learnt that...

  • translation is when an object slides in any direction;
  • rotation is when an object is turned around a central point;
  • reflection is when an object is flipped and has a line of symmetry.

Our challenge was to design a car badge that contained at least one of these aspects of transformation.

Here is my original:

Here is my badge with signs of translation:

Feedback/Feedforward:
Aye, I love it how you have made your car badge about what you love to do. I think you have tried very hard to make both sides exactly the same. You could have made left side of the A a bit longer so it is the same on both sides but other than that I think you have done a really great job. #Amy

Evaluation:
I'm proud of my badge and how it showed reflection and order. I'm also proud of how I added details I like, like the color purple. I think next time I should add more translation to show my understanding.

NEWS PAPER REPORT
THE STRUCTURE OF A SCHOOL BUS

Young artist and daughter of our favourite architect Franklin Figs, Mallory Figs has came up with an unusual idea. Her 'idea' of an art project has become viral for the past few weeks. Everyone has been asking if Mallory's project was intended to be a success or was inspired by a certain topic. For everyone to understand her project she decided to tell us all her story.

This young artist went to art classes and really loves the assignments her art teacher gives her. "She is very passionate about what she does and she knows she gonna be a success in her art." Her art teacher explains. Her art teacher gave the class an assignment to create a project that is inspired by you. The whole class had to finish this by the end of the two terms. The project was big and  really made Mallory excited. Nothing really struck in her mind though. She was unsure of ideas and nothing really inspired her. When she walked back home she was thinking of ideas. When she arrived at the bus stop she paused. Her mouth dropped and her eyes beamed. The bus stop that stood in front of her was completely destroyed. She saw the bus  broken down in the bus stop. "Did the bus crash into the bus stop?"
"All my thoughts drizzled away as I confronted the bus stop." Mallory blurts. Mallory always remembered that, that particular bus stop was not like the others. From this confusing response she says that the bus stop had posters all around it that informed people that the bus stop is going to be remade into an environmentally friendly children's playground. Mallory knew the posters have been there for months and never gotten stripped down. It does break Mallory's heart that all that all  that planning has been destroyed. But instead of worrying about it and doing nothing she did something else. She called her dad to get more architects and constructers to create a bigger project then she had in mind. She wanted to create a bus morphed into a bus stop! "It is a weird idea but I want to show everyone that this is what happens if you don't drive safely." Mallory says. Intrigued with Mallory's idea he agreed to  join her project.
